Featuring our Social Media Marketing Talent, Mr Chan Meng Kit.
We are delighted to have with us, Mr Chan Meng Kit (right), who holds a Cool Media Job, to share with us his working experience.
Read below for his interview with our Social Media Team!
1) What do you do?
I am the Assistant Manager at Brandcore. Brandcore is a boutique brand development company that strategise brand development across several industries and sectors. My job scope includes Account Management, Project Management, assisting clients with their events, devising marketing plans and social media plans, and the day-to-day administration and operation of the company.
Social Media is such a huge trend now that I use this new media frequently to generate publicity for my clients. There was a client who approached us to set up a Facebook page for them. The objective was to increase fan base for their product and target was to have 2000 fans at the end of six months. To achieve this, a campaign was ran – Be a fan and win an iPad. Within six months, the Facebook page acquired 4000 fans. Our client was very happy with the outcome.

2) You’ve attended the Creative Industries Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (CI WSQ) modular courses. How has the CI WSQ classes helped you in your job?
The classes have helped me a lot in my line of work. I will highlight a few. I’ve attended the “WSQ Promote Products & Services on Social Media” class where I’ve learnt to write social media plans to help promote our clients’ products, services and events.
I’ve also learnt how to devise marketing plans which are very important as we need research and statistic to back our proposals to solicit buy-in from our clients. Hence, taking up the Conducting Market Research module was very useful. My research skills were enhanced and I was able to pitch my projects to my clients more successfully.
Another module that I’ve studied was “Understanding Return of Investment (ROI)”. I learnt how to measure and evaluate ROI at the end of a campaign. Again, this is crucial as clients will be eager to know what kind of results the campaign has yielded and whether the campaign have met their objectives.
The CI WSQ modular courses definitely provided me with industry-relevant skills and knowledge such that I could almost immediately apply what I’ve learnt in the class to my work. I would sincerely encourage people in the media who wish to upgrade their knowhow or make a career switch like myself, to try out these WSQ programmes.

3) What were you doing before this?
I graduated with a college degree in 2008 and spent two years in the magazine publishing sector. In this sector, I’ve liaised with magazine distributors, managed printers and designers, and made sure everything was delivered on time. However, the job got a little mundane. It was not as interesting and exciting as I anticipated it to be.
4) Why did you choose New Media Marketing?
I am very energetic, am always looking for new ideas to stimulate my mind. I knew I had to look for something new and interesting, and I found New Media Marketing while surfing the internet.
Brandcore, my employer, sent me to Singapore Media Academy to take up CI WSQ courses. My boss was very supportive of the CI WSQ training. That took a huge load off my mind for me to fully concentrate on the modules that I was taking.
5) What challenges do you face?
This job is challenging as I am under constant pressure of meeting deadlines day in, day out, and it does not stop after that. I have to make sure that my traditional and new media marketing tools and collaterals have the appropriate colour, material, clarity, and if it is according to the requirement of my clients. Upon completion of a project, another one pops up. Apart from these, there are the month end billings, daily administration and operation matters to clear.
These challenges have actually improved my work performance as every project has been a learning experience for me. I’m motivated to achieve better outcome for every new projects that I undertake.
6) Best part of the job
“Great Job!” from the clients.
